Suriname is still known as the greenest country in the world. The jungle is immense and has a particularly large diversity of wild fruits, orchids, medicinal plants, trees and shrubs. Flowers and especially plants are very important in Surinamese culture.

The Orchideenmarkt is highly recommended for the plant lover! This is located near the Cultuurtuin and the location, a small park with large trees, is nice and cool and shady. All these markets are free to visit and can be done as a half day excursion.

The Palula plant has a long stem and orange-red leaves with a yellow edge. The plant grows to about one to two meters high, has barge-shaped, orange-red leaves with a yellow edge and a greenish top with fairly inconspicuous flowers in the bracts. Grows in the wild, but is also sometimes grown for its flowers
