Independence Day is a national holiday on November 25.

This day is celebrated with great devotion. The people congratulate each other and they wear traditional creole clothes. In 1974, political groups were already making propaganda for the independence of Suriname, one of which was the Nationalist Republic.

Prime Minister H.A.E Arron announced the pursuit of independence on February 15, 1974, in a government statement that independence should take place at the end of 1975.

On November 19, 1975, the new constitution and flag of Suriname were approved by the states and voted to terminate the Statute for the Kingdom of the Netherlands. In addition, the Netherlands would provide 3.5 billion Dutch guilders in development aid.

On November 25, 1975, the public announcement of the independent Republic of Suriname took place. Prime Minister Den uyl and Crown Princess Beatrix were present.
Before and after this important day, a great exodus of emigrants took place.
